The Ultimate Fighter   by Sarah Michaels

One of the most surprising reality TV show hits in recent years has been Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter.” Putting hungry fighters in a house as they compete for a shot at a UFC contract has proven to create plenty of tension and has kept viewers coming back season after season. “The Ultimate Fighter” combines the drama of reality favorites such as “Big Brother” and “The Real World” with hard-pounding MMA action into a show that has been a proven ratings winner. Whether the competitors are doing battle with their MMA gloves on in the ring or taking verbal and physical shots at each other in the house, the show is always compelling.

The new season of “The Ultimate Fighter” recently debuted, and as usual the show features the fighters split into two teams coached by legends of the sport. In this case, the two camps are coached by Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, two fighters with a long history of animosity between each other. However, unlike in past seasons this won’t be a build-up for a PPV fight at the end of the season: Liddell’s next appearance in fight shorts will be against Rich Franklin.

As with many reality TV shows, “The Ultimate Fighter” serves as a potential platform for plenty of promotional items. Fighters consume energy drinks from UFC sponsors and travel to and from training and fights in cars whose brands are prominently displayed. The product placement extends to
MMA clothing: TapouT supplies the official training and ring gear of the show, a fact which gives the brand plenty of exposure to MMA fans and fighters each week.

“The Ultimate Fighter” has become so successful that you can now purchase
MMA shirts from TapouT that are replicas of the red and blue Team Liddell and Team Ortiz shirts worn by contestants on the show. You can also purchase the same boardshorts used by fighters during their training during the show. While you might not be confused with an MMA fighter by wearing the gear, you can show your affinity for one of the hottest shows on television.
